My work honors the human experience through abstracted portraiture, patterns and symbolism – the hieroglyphics of one’s journey. The symbol I use consistently is an abstracted magpie, a bird that is cloaked with superstition and has a nefarious reputation. However it is also common to salute the first magpie one sees to show respect and seek good fortune. This inspires my work – the magpie as an omen of change. Accordingly, the presence of the magpie is a calling to enter a crucible of the spirit. It asks you to rethink social norms, to shift perspectives, to be open to personal transformation.
With respect to TKE, the journey embodies a mathematical architecture from which to create movement: the inspiration for my pattern making. I used various sizes of hexagons as symbols of community but also to honor the modular shapes, angled lines and patterns created within them. This represents our human connectivity and the importance of collaboration in the creation of ideas, as all whole things are the sum of many parts.
